We welcome you our gastro pub with refined British cuisine, in a cosy, warm dining room with oak beams, flagstone flooring and open fireplaces. Tim & Emma

Located in Godshill in the heart of the outstandingly beautiful Isle of Wight countryside, The Taverners is a 17th century pub, brimming with history and a cosy, welcoming vibe.

A haven for locals, walkers, cyclists and visitors alike, the site offers the perfect location to enjoy the Great British countryside and the ideal spot to enhance a rural retreat, family break or staycation.

We’re passionate about great food and drink, with a menu focused on seasonal local produce, delicious pub classics and plenty of award-winning cask conditioned beer on the taps. We have a huge passion for the great world of wine with plenty to choose from by the glass or carafe.

In the warmer months our large beer garden is ideal for al fresco dining or soaking up some Isle of Wight sunshine over a few drinks.

The Taverners is the perfect base for exploring the island and the world class walking, cycling and dog-walking opportunities in the and around the Isle of Wight.

HISTORY

Godshill is an ancient parish and even existed before the Doomsday book, with the first recorded spelling being Godeshulle. The name is thought to have arrived from the 7th century with stones being used to build a church in a field ‘moved themselves’ at night to the top of the hill, and this lead to the church being built on top of the hill, hence the name Godshill.

Nestled in the heart of this thatched village lies The Taverners. A building drenched in history The Taverners began life as a bakehouse, if you look closely in our front bar the evidence of a large oven still remains. The building then played host to the local post office before finally taking shape as The Taverners public house.

Today we are a place for good food, great beer and a welcoming atmosphere.
